DESCRIPTION

The City of West Sacramento unveiled the new Joseph “Joey” Lopes Park in June of 2016. The park honors memories of its namesake, a famous boxer who called the area home during his life. Blackburn Consulting provided geotechnical design for construction of:

  • a cantilever market shade structure,
  • hot mix asphalt parking areas,
  • concrete flatwork,
  • light standards,
  • play structures,
  • a half basketball court,
  • a community garden,
  • a low impact storm water management system, and
  • underground utility improvements.

Blackburn performed subsurface exploration, laboratory testing, and borehole infiltration tests (percolation tests) to support geotechnical design. We provided recommendations for new hot mix asphalt and concrete flatwork pavement sections, foundations for the shade structure, play structures, and light standards, building code seismic design parameters, design infiltration rates for storm water management system design, grading, and trench backfill.

This $8.2 million park project memorializes the legacy of Joseph Lopes and provides a space for the enrichment of the surrounding West Sacramento community.
