DESCRIPTION

The Rio Linda Boulevard Bridge Replacement project will improve traffic operations, enhance safety, and improve access to the Sacramento Northern Bike Trail. The project involved the design of a new single-span structure to replace the existing Rio Linda Boulevard Bridge over Magpie Creek.

Blackburn prepared a Foundation Report for the new bridge replacement and a Geotechnical Report for the widening and realignment of Rio Linda Boulevard and Magpie Creek. The Foundation Report included evaluating potential settlement and loading impacts on an existing 48-inch diameter sewer line that crossed beneath both new abutment foundations. We provided pipeline protection recommendations that included vertically isolating the pile cap bottom over the pipeline area with polystyrene foam to prevent additional vertical pipe loading, and installing permanent isolation casing around the new cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) pile foundations adjacent to the pipeline to prevent lateral loading of the existing pipeline from the new bridge foundations.
